Audio Data (Podcasting)
PocketRSS now supports Podcasting (aka: mp3 audio enclosures).
This is a new feature and we will continually improve podcasting support within
PocketRSS. Currently, PocketRSS only supports RSS 2.0 audio
enclosures. Since the audio files are so large in comparison to feed
data, the audio content is not stored in the PocketRSS database. Instead
the data is stored in a user-defined Audio Cache Folder and organized by
Feeds. If audio content is available for a particular feed item, you will
see a little speaker image
in the View mode
listing. Pressing the speaker image, will automatically start playing the
audio file with your default mp3 player (generally, Windows Media Player).
A special "Audio Data" view is available from the top-right popup menu
(Special|Audio Data) when you are in View Mode
. This view will show a listing of items with audio data available or
queued for downloading. Also, the "Audio Data" view will show memory
usage (MB) in the format of
[<queuedForDownload>|<inUse>|<maxLimit>].
Audio Symbols...
- available
- queued for download
- unavailable/broken
At anytime, you can tap on the Audio Symbol to either autoplay "available"
audio data or to see a popup menu of options you may perform for an item with
audio content.
To use Audio Data...
1) go to "PocketRSS Settings", and configure the Audio/Podcasting section.
2) from RSS mode, select a Feed, open it's Feed Properties (via popup menu), go
to Settings section and enable Audio Data.
3) if (2) has previously downloaded Feed data, then Purge Data (via popup
menu), and then Update Feed data
4) now double tap on the Feed in the RSS mode, this will take you to the View
mode for your Audio Feed.
5) the listing will show all the items that have audio data available for
download.
6) now you can either download individual audio data (via item popup menu) or
download all "queued" audio data via the main menu.
The amount of audio data downloaded depends on your PocketRSS
Settings. PocketRSS will download audio data until you exceed your
maximum allowed storage configured in your PocketRSS Settings. Once you
exceed your storage limits, PocketRSS will automatically start purging old
audio data in order to make room for newer downloaded audio data.
Note: Podcasting support is not
automatically enabled. You must enable it on a per Feed basis, via the
Feed Properties. The very first time you enable Audio Data for
a Feed, you may need to "Purge" the data for that Feed, so that the next
Feed update starts watching for Audio Data.
Note: Since audio data is so large, it is not included in the
normal AutoReload events, but has its own special download scheduling.
Use "PocketRSS Setting" from main menu to set Audio settings.
Hint: If an audio data download fails, you might want to
configure your PocketRSS Settings Special|Max Retries to have PocketRSS
automatically retry the download.
